Make Sure all the Roles in Your Company Are Filled

I have a story to tell you, once I was assisting an entire company and I asked everyone on the team what their main responsibilities were so I would know who to go to for what. The next day, I got a message from one of my bosses that requested an immediate meeting.

They told me that I wasn't allowed to ask people what they were responsible for because everyone wears "a lot of hats".

People didn't know what their main responsibilities were and were going to their bosses asking if they'd clarify their priorities and expectations.

They said I was creating more confusion and I needed to stop. I was shocked.

It's one thing to wear a lot of hats, but it's another to not know what hats you're supposed to be wearing - how will you know if you're wearing it well or what occasion to wear it to?

I firmly believe that you should create roles BASED on primary responsibilities and everyone should know what their primary responsibilities, expectations, and metrics are (more about this in last week's newsletter).

But what if you - and everyone else - really does have too much on their plate?

It might be time to hire more people.

And if it's just you, it might be time to hire someone to take the things off your plate that are causing you to step away from flying the plane to serve the coffee.

Having a well-rounded team can make all the difference in achieving success and balance.

But how do you ensure that all the roles are filled, and everyone is working in their zone of genius and joy?

First, take a step back and evaluate yourself and your current team. Think about what tasks are taking up too much of your time, and whether there's someone on your team who could take them on. Consider your own strengths and weaknesses, and who might be able to fill the gaps.

Don't be afraid to eliminate, automate, or delegate certain tasks, or hire new team members to fill those gaps. You may be surprised at how much more productive and efficient your team can be when everyone is working towards their strengths and passions.

Communication and collaboration are also key to a successful team. Prioritize regular check-ins with team members to ensure everyone is on the same page and to offer feedback for improvement.

It's important to take the time to evaluate your team and make sure everyone is working in their zone of genius and joy. By doing so, you can create a more efficient and enjoyable work environment for everyone involved.

Action Items:

  1. Evaluate your current team and determine if there are any gaps in roles or skill sets.

  2. Consider outsourcing or hiring new team members to fill those gaps.

  3. Prioritize communication and collaboration within your team.

  4. Keep evaluating your team and the things on your plate.

  5. Don't forget about the LEAD exercise to determine what can be eliminated, automated, and delegated.

💡 Why this is important: Everyone working in their zone of genius and joy will help you streamline and scale your business and create more fun, focus, and free time.
