Millions of Immigrants to be Deported
21 Feb 2017 Millions of immigrants will now be deported with new immigration enforcements on the table. Under the previous administration, individuals that had not committed a crime, or had committed non-criminal offenses, were generally safe from deportation. Now under the Trump administration’s strict guidelines, any individuals that have committed a crime, from shoplifting, to overstaying their visas, or crossing the border illegally, will now have a much higher risk of being jailed, and deported. Tuesday’s memo was sign by Secretary John Kelly and involves a broader use of a program that fast-tracks deportations. The American Civil Liberties Union has issued a statement saying that they will be challenging the stricter regulations. It is unknown exactly how many individuals these policies will impact, at this time. For Sum News, I’m Summer Slevin. Astronomers Discover Seven New Worlds
22 Feb 2017 Is there life in space? Astronomers on Wednesday made a statement that gives more substance to the possibility that there is. NASA and a Belgian led research team announced that they have discovered seven, potentially habitable, earth-size planets orbiting a star in the constellation Aquarius. More studies need to be done to determine if the atmosphere for these planets are able to hold life, but this is massive discovery for the scientific community, because as one of the researchers, Amaury Triaud states, "We've made a crucial step toward finding if there is life out there.” For Sum News, I’m Summer Slevin #SumNews #NASA #LifeInSpace Picture from Wikimedia Commons To Read the AP’s Article, go to http://bit.ly/2lHvkGr SoundCloud https://soundcloud.com/sumnews/seven-new-worlds |
President Proposes Increase in Military Spending
27 Feb 2017 President Trump released his proposal to increase the military’s spending budget on Monday. Trump is proposing an increase of $53 billion into the federal budget specifically for new aircrafts, ships, and fighters. This increase comes at a time when many other programs within the United States are facing massive reductions. The cuts to domestic programs and foreign aid totals $54 billion and would target specific programs such as the Environmental Protection Agency. The detailed blueprint of Trump’s proposal is expected to be released next month. For #SumNews, I’m Summer Slevin.
